JSS 3 WEEK 4: INTERNET (SEARCH ENGINES)

THE INTERNET

Internet is a global wide area network that connects computer systems across the world. It also means international network. To connect to the internet, you must have access to an internet service provider (ISP), which acts the middleman between you (the user) and the internet.
The internet can be defined as a global system of interconnected computer networks that use the standard internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) transmission control protocol/internet protocol to serve billions of users worldwide. It is a network of networks that consists of millions of private, public, academic, business and government networks. It is a platform for exchange of resources and services through the inter-linked hypertext documents of the worldwide web (www) and the infrastructure to support email.

THE BASIC TERMS OF INTERNET

The internet can be defined as a global system of interconnected computer networks that use the standard internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) transmission control protocol/internet protocol to serve billions of users worldwide.

INTERNET BROWSERS

Internet or web browser is a software program that is used to view or access the internet web pages. It helps to displays information provided by a specific server. Examples/types of internet browsers are Opera mini, Mozilla Firefox, Internet explorer, Safari, Google chrome, Netscape, etc.

WORLD WIDE WEB

The World Wide Web, or simply web, is a way of accessing information over the medium of the internet. It is an information-sharing model that is built on top of the internet. The web uses the HTTP protocol, only one of the languages spoken over the internet, to transmit data. Web services, which use HTTP to allow applications to communicate in order to exchange business logic, use the web to share information. The web also utilizes browsers, such as Internet Explorer or Firefox, to access Web documents called WebPages that are linked to each other via hyperlinks.
Web documents also contain graphics, sounds, text and video. The web is just one of the ways that information can be disseminated over the internet, so the web is just a portion of the Internet and not the internet itself, but the two terms are not synonymous and should not be confused for each other.

SEARCH ENGINE

A web search engine is a software system that is designed to search for information on the World Wide Web. The search results are generally presented in a line of results often referred to as search engine results pages (SERPs). The information may be a mix of web pages, images, and other types of files. Some search engines also mine data available in databases or open directories. Examples of search engines are:

i. Google.com
ii. Mama.com
iii. Ask.com
iv. Yahoo.com
v. Askjeeves.com
VI. Lycos.com
vii. Safari.com etc.

USES OF SEARCH ENGINES

Search Engines can be used to:
·       Easily find and download information on any topic.
·       Get definition of words, acronyms etc.
·       Carry out research.
·       Used to find images, pictures and sound.
·       Search for information about people, places and product.

ASSIGNMENT

1. How is a Search Engine different from a web directory?
2. Use the internet or page 16 of your textbook (Handbook on Computer Studies book 3) to explain any two (2) search engines you know.
